Preparations

Getting ready…

  • Skip fragrances so you (and others) will be able to use your sense of smell, especially when we are in the trees!

  • For private events, sign a release BEFORE the beginning of the event. If you are not able to do so online, arrive 10 minutes early and sign it in person.

  • Check the facilities before you go. Some locations do not have restrooms or have constrained parking. Look for a link to more information about the location provided with the event information.

  • Be prepared to have your cell phone off or on airplane mode during the experience. Pro tip: Tell your people that you will be unavailable during the event. It may help you relax and help them to hold this space for you.

  • Arrive 10-15 minutes early to allow time for gathering yourself, finding the group, taking a bathroom break, etc.

What should I bring?

Sturdy shoes or boots with good traction, clothing/outerwear that will keep you comfortable in the weather of the day, and a water bottle. Consider whether sunblock or an umbrella are warranted. Optional: snacks, a journal and pen, sketch pad, camera, and mat or plastic grocery bag (for staying dry while sitting on wet ground or benches).

Can I bring my dog?

Unless your dog is a service animal, probably not. Many places we go prohibit dogs in order to protect restoration efforts and/or fragile habitat. Beyond that, the purpose of these outings are to facilitate participants’ deep connection to nature. Dogs tend to distract (either their owner or others) from this purpose.

What sort of mobility is required to participate?

Participants need to be able to travel ~ 2 miles on uneven surfaced-trail with mild elevation gain/loss. Being able to bend over or kneel/sit down to look at things is helpful but not necessary. Participants will have the opportunity to rest and go at their own pace.

Are these outings appropriate for children?

Unless explicitly stated otherwise, these outings can be great for kids that are mobile, curious about the outdoors, and can focus for periods of time. If your kiddos are little (0-2 years) and you will be packing them, that is also fine and there is no need to get them a ticket. If you are considering bringing kids, be aware that those supervising children during these experiences can sometimes inhibit your own ability to participate.

What accommodations are available?

We would welcome the opportunity to discuss how we might be able to make this experience accessible for your set of circumstances. Please contact us at natureengagingnature@gmail.com.
